I've replaced these things a dozen times when they start making that horrid racket. But at the minute it's not making a noise, and I have a fail and an advisory. Excessive play on one side, and slight play on the other.
Can I get away with tightening them up by a notch or two, or is it a bearing replacement again?
You tighten them to 25Nm, then back them off. You need to do the first setting to load them up before backing off to the running setting. If they sound OK and it's just excessive play then I'd inspect and tighten.
I remember now. Yeah, last time I did the offside one that's what I did, but the garage did the nearside one, and that's the one that's failed.
Plenty of other things to sort out first, CV joint, Track rod end, headlight beam too high, tires... Need to decide whether it's worth spending money on it to keep it another year....
