  • [Corsa C 2000-2006] Corsa C Red Battery Light

Trust this to happen a week before Trax...

Basically I'm driving along and sometimes the red battery light comes on and off for a couple seconds at a time. Other times I have to lower the RPM from keys say 3k all the way down to idle before it goes off again. Then put it back into gear and after a while it'll come back on again.

Must also mention that my auxiliary belt squeaks at low RPM when in gear pulling away.

Could this be a faulty alternator? Or the belt might be loose so it thinks it's not charging the battery?

I'm not having any electrical power issues, all works fine, HID's don't flicker or anything. Everything works as it should but the light keeps coming on and off

I'd try tightening the belt first, if it's slipping the alternator might not be driven sufficient to charge the battery. If that doesn't do it then it's probably the alternator itself. Measure the voltage at the battery with the engine running, it ought to be about 14v.

Done a test on the battery came out as 13.71v whilst the engine was running.

That looks OKish, but if the belt is loose it might be slipping under load. As said, tighten the belt first of all, or try some talc on it as a temporary measure.

Will give it a try, belt looks tight as it is because of the compressor.

          Thanks Taurus

All of the symptoms that you have stated, point to the belt (and possibly the pullies) being worn, rather than an alternator problem.
Even if it is tight, a worn belt/pulley combination can still slip under load.

            Regards.

Hopefully I'll be getting a new belt this week before Trax

              Cheers guys.

Finally fitted the belt yesterday, no change to the light at all. So I'm guessing the alternator is fxcked

Light only comes on periodically, so not a massive problem as the battery is fine and is holding loads of charge. I'll just have to ease off the music and night driving for a while until I can get this problem sorted.

I got a petrol alt for 20quid off eBay. I give the working but noisey one away to be weighed in :/

It was a bit of a **** to do and my mate sorted it for me. He has the skills and tools. But twenty quid to replace alt is a good price, see what you can do it for. You'll want it in winter.

Is it true the alternator actually doesn't charge the battery but just replaces charge used from starting?

I didn't do that when nine went flat. It was wired up to a batt charger for twenty mins then ran the car for 30.

It's been ok for weeks now. Maybe I'll get it fully charged in case

It'll have enough charge in it to fire the engine - but if you were to measure the electrolyte in it I'd bet it's not at full charge.
