  • [Corsa B 1993-2000] Idling problem

Hi all, this could be mechanical or electrical but i'll start with this section.

    The Car is a Corsa B Sport, 1999, 1.4 16v petrol engine.

When starting the car from cold it struggles to get going. Not struggle to start it will start fine after one of two turns but will hover at around 2-300 revs for the first 3 seconds or so before rising to about 1200revs. It never idles below that level.

After the engine gets hot, normally i drive it into town about 7 mile or so of country roads and about a mile of town driving after that.
It will only idle at 2500+ revs without fail sometimes as high at 3500. (In context the redline is at 6000 and at 3500 you can do 70mph.)

It used to slowly come back down to about 1200 if left it but now it will sit at 2500 without fail.
Left for about 30 seconds at that speed it will also put the engine management light on.
My code reader won't link with the ECU but you can't be surprised at that for what i paid for the thing.

Previously it would idle at that speed but you could bring it down with the clutch and drive along, now however i am having to use the brake to control my speed especially in low gears like 1st and 2nd gear and reverse. If this gets any worse it will be pretty much un-drivable.

I think i've put everything down if theres anything i've missed just tell me and i'll reply.

Any suggestions much appreciated on this.

    Many thanks
    Pydeeny

On idle, do the revs change off you press brake pedal?

Not that i've noticed, i tend to stop with my foot on the brake but also use the handbrake and have noticed no difference.
I'm going to go start it and pump the pedal see if i can affect it in any way.

Just tried pumping the pedal with it at idle.
Its getting cooler now and the engine has cooled so its only doing about 1200 revs.
Pumping the pedal i wouldn't say made any difference.

Perhaps a little on releasing the pedal but only about 20-50rpm difference.

I have to say starting it now when its cooled down outside its almost idling normally actually, it didn't immediately go to 1200 revs like it normally does during the day.

Might be worth looking at changing the CTS then. They're only cheap, but if its temperature related I'd start there first

I'd start with cleaning the throttle body and checking the idle control.
