  • [Corsa B 1993-2000] Tuning a corsa B 1.7 diesel

Hi, what bhp do the bottom ends on the corsa Bs take? With the Isuzu 1.7 diesel. I'm looking to up the power on my mums while I borrow it during a holiday home, she won't be needing it again.

I've seen them take 150bhp before ona rebuilt bottom end, but you'll need very deep pockets to get that far.
It's not the power that kills them, but too much heat from not enough fuel at higher revs causes the pistons and rings to get burt.
Too much boost pressure causes the conrods to bend as well (at about 1.9BAR)

The non turbo one only makes around 65bhp and without the turbo on it you'll be lucky to get 75bhp out it.

      Hi Thanks for your reply.

That plan is to put a turbo on it, but mostly worried about how much the engine bottom end can take. So they are all ok upto about 1.9 bar boost?

You won't be able to put a turbo on it without lowering the compression ratio and fitting the fuel pump off a turbo diesel.
It would be much easier to fit a complete 1.7td engine and gearbox from a vectra, cavalier or astra.

          Hi,
          Thanks for your reply –
The car will more than likely be going to scrap in 6 months time; so longevity is not too much on the books, I just don’t want it to blow in 400 miles like my last TD.
The plan was to put the top hat off a TD bosch VE injection pump to give it the juice when it needs it and adjust accordingly. I was thinking of drilling out the pistons/clover leaf on top of the pistons as a lash up to drop the CR slightly. Not sure what the blocks will take as standard though, any ideas when the rods start to buckle/bend this is my main concern… I kept blowing XUD’s before and they tend to go around 2 bar with lots of timing but not sure when the N/A 1.7 goes, are they identical blocks to the TD engine or do they have different internals?

Not sure on the differences on the N/A blocks vs the turbo Isuzu ones apart from the compression ratio.

One of the main problems with tuning the TD engines is the fuel pump struggles to deliver enough fuel at higher revs so they run lean and the pistons get burnt.

1.5bar is probably a safe bet with a front mount intercooler, cone filter and exhaust you should see around 110bhp
