Ok so i just got this new car,98 corsa 1.2 8v looks to be. Seems to have a tick that lines up with the rpms as far as how often it ticks. I have a video that i'm posting to you tube now and will link once its done. Checked the oil and its at a fine level. I honestly don't know much about the car other then the last NCT(mot) it had was in October of last here and passed with flying colors, since the NCT its only done about 150 miles.
They're hydraulic so usually they won't make any noise unless the camshaft is seriously worn. Back in the day I used to see these with lobes half-gone and they didn't make any noise at all. Most likely is a blocked lifter - I'd use a stethoscope or a metal bar / screwdriver to listen to the internals, you'll track it down for sure that way.
They're easy to work on so it shouldn't be difficult to fix. If you are feeling lazy and it isn't worth spending any time on it you could try some hydraulic lifter cleaner in there. It might work. I had a Cavalier I picked up that was ticking loudly, drove it a mile down the road and it stopped, ran for another 75k without any problem.
it seems to not be as loud once it warms up. I was thinking about putting one step thicker oil in to maybe help it. Seems to be louder on the right side compared to the left.
Thicker oil won't help. If anything you want something a bit thinner to get in there quicker. If it's quieter when warm that's due to the oil thinning as it gets hot so it flows better.
ok well when i checked the oil it looked a bit black for my liking so i'm gonna do an oil change probably this weekend, I've always been a fan of using 10w30 in older cars so i might stick with that but if you think a 5w30 would work a little better i can give that a go.
In one of those I'd use a 10W/40. When you said you were going thicker I assumed you meant thicker than the recommended oil, which is 10W/40 for that age of engine.
i have to say the oil looks ****, it seems to have been sitting for at least a few months as well, or at least doing minimal mileage. i'll stick with 10w40 and do an oil change this weekened, hopefully that clears it up
If it's been sitting for a while I'd give it some new oil and filter and drive it for a bit. That's the same as the Cavalier I mentioned. After driving it was fine.
thanks guys gonna go ahead and do that this weekend. since its last NCT which was in october last year its only done like 150 miles so it had to of been sitting around a fair amount.
