  • [Corsa C] Tracking out / Driver side wheel sqeak / Inside Bald on Spare

    Ok, I have posted about the driver side wheel sqeuak back in AC however I've yet to take a look at it, my steering has been out without any drift for a few months and I had no idea until today how serious out tracking could be.

    A security guard at my work place had a feel of my tyres (which were only a month or so old when I bought car 3 months ago) and said that the inside feels like its wearing more than the outside.


    I had an MOT and all came back fine, as I was thinking it maybe the track rod end (after talking to a friend) that was causing the noise, but now I think it could just need the tracking doing.

    It all came to light when I checked out my spare wheel to see that one side was fine and the inside was bare to threads and I suddently realised that tracking wasnt just the steering been slightly out.


    I'm going to get tracking done tommorow, does it seem right to do this right away and I wont have to replace track rod ends? If I still have a squeak I'll continue to look into it, but the ride im sure doesnt feel as nice as it did a few weeks ago (Maybe uneven tyre wear as I do a lot of miles).

    Tracking won't cause a squeak. Squeak is more than likely dust shield slightly bent and touching back of brake disc, they're very brittle and can be pushed back with one finger.

      I'll get tracking done to sort out the wonky steering and tyre wear then take off my wheel as found a jack under my spare.
      I'll take off the wheel in a few days and have a look, only get enough time to sleep between shifts atm.

      Since my spare looks worn to hell I'm going to find a part worn tyre suitable for a spare as that one certainly isn't.

        Let us know what the guy says re. the tracking. It might be worth getting a 4 wheel alignment check done if it's way out - just to make sure.

          They have made it better but I'm still getting reds, they said it was "see sawing" I think and that I should come back in 2 weeks to see if it needs correcting again/more.


          One wheel was so out it didn't have a reading. This is shown from a photo of the live data.

          Hmm notice where it says Corsa on the screen, the dates are wrong - Is that going to effect my settings? It does feel better and the steering is not lined up correctly and not to the left (Wheel - No Pull).


          A picture of the spare which brought all this to light is to follow!

            Just drove to work there (40miles) and its certainly better, actually feels faster and hard to explain but feels more "forward and focused". Steering is now straight also. Glad I got it done.

            Those readings look OK to you guys? Taurus you think it needs anymore work?

                Yeah. 45 which think was a bit expensive, but I'm happy either way for the improvement. Will take it back for another check in 2 weeks.

                  I bet you it wasn't as bad as my tyre wear that I had yesterday when I changed my tyres over

                    But thats what I think mine will be like if I didnt sort my tracking out, is yours out? or tyre rub from lowering?

                      45 is fair enough for a 4 wheel alignment job. It would be worth getting them to set up the machine for your car rather than a B when you go back. No harm mentioning that to them when you go.

                      It would be useful to know what they have actually done, I'd suspect they just worked on the front tracking using the usual adjustments. I should have asked - is your car lowered or running non-standard suspension? (I'd assumed not but better check.) With those readings I'm wondering if someone's had the suspension apart and not set it up right, or there's play in there - but I'd hope they'd have checked for that.

                        They adjusted it by standing under the front wheels with the car on a ramp, wheels didnt come off.

                        Stock suspension and not lowered. They tweaked one wheel then it moved the other and tweaked the other by sounds of it (see sawing) and it took them quite a while to get it better. They want me to come back and get it rechecked due to see sawing and the level of it was out (maybe they are trying to see if they is any give or fault like you are).

                        I personally think its just been out for months/years - they let the spare get worn on the inside and the trims were scuffed a lot so I think its curbed, maybe why that wheel had a squeak and maybe why the otherside needed a CV boot.

                        It probably wasnt noticed as it was a town car, It does certainly feel better currently.

                          Thanks for that info. What they will have done is to adjust the steering geometry via the adjustment in the track rods. That won't have a huge effect on the camber angles. See how it is next time - and how its drives between now and then. I'd suspect the front suspension needs a checking over if it's had a lot of curbing.

                            I stupidly didn't think my tracking wasn't out much as I eyed it up when adjusting it, looks like I made it waaaay out.

                            To be fair I done nearly 400 miles on the tyre and as it was already worn on the inside when I bought the car as well haha

                              You can get the tracking pretty good using nothing more than bits of wood, string and a tape measure. You can check the camber using home made gadgets as well. I tried eyeballing it once before I measured it - I was way off as well.
