[Corsa C 2000-2006] 1.3 diesel slow starting

Hi all

Sorry if any of this stuff is obvious but I'm new to cars and just wondered if anyone can help. I have two problems with my 06 1.3 diesel corsa which I guess may be related.

1) My car is struggling to start. When I turn the key it starts turning over really slowly but won't bite. The speed of it turning over gradually increases and after 2 or 3 tries it will eventually start. Once it starts there's quite a bit of white smoke coming out of the exhaust. The longer it is left idle on the drive the more difficult it is to start and if I only leave it for a couple of hours it will start as normal.

2) On the motorway it occasionally loses power after I have put my foot down. The car will continue to drive at 70 but won't accelerate. Once I restart the car it works as normal again. I'm guessing this is the turbo? If it is how much would it cost to replace?

Any help would be greatly appreciated and I'm happy to take it into a garage if needed but I quite enjoy working on my car so would like to fix it if possible. If any further information would be helpful let me know.

Re. the struggling to start - first thing is to check the battery is fully charged and holding charge. The next step is to check all connections on the battery, earth straps and starter.

Re. motorway lack of acceleration there are many possible causes. Begin with when was it last serviced, all filters changed etc. Any sign of the engine management light coming on when it loses power?

Thanks! I had the battery checked at Halfords and they said it was fine but I'll check the connections.


All of the filters in the car were changed within the last 9 months. No sign of the engine management light coming on.
