  • [Corsa B 1993-2000] Check engine light

Will my check engine light come on if my timing belt has gone?

  • #2
possibly. why do you suspect cambelt failure?

I'd say no but if the belt went I'd would think it would lead to a problem which would cause the light to come on

A couple of days ago I turned the car over to hear a rattle type sound and the engine light on, the car has been sat for weeks and turned over now and then

There's no sensor of any sort that monitors the timing chain per se, so no.

However, an overly loose chain, or a chain that has skipped a tooth would cause the camshaft timing to go awry, which would most likely result in a cam position sensor error code.

A chain can snap when just turning over. Easy to check, just take the cam cover off.

Okay I'll have a look tomorrow in daylight, can I tell it's going by looking at it?

Yes - the chain ought to be intact running across the top of the engine between the two camshaft sprockets. It will have a small amount of play. If it's snapped it's obvious.

On some engines you can take the oil filler cap off and see if the camshafts are turning when you rotate the crankshaft by hand. But on these there is a baffle which stops you seeing the cam lobes.
