  • [Corsa B 1993-2000] Painting exterior plastic parts

    Hello,
I want to paint all my exterior plastic parts, which are originally black, matte black (bumpers, wheel trims, tailgate trim, scuttle panel and more...).
I need to know, which steps I need to follow to bring the best results for plastic parts? and what products I need to buy? (Regarding sanding, painting ...)

    Thanks

I sprayed some plastic bits on my car recently, I just took them off and sprayed Matt black straight on, it's not the best way but no paint has come off and I did it w couple of weeks ago

If you want to spray gloss black then you will need to sand down, Primer, spray then lacquer

      I'm painting matte black,
It also needs primer right? should I spray primer and let it dry and sand it? or I should spray color over the primer immediately after 10 minutes from spraying primer?

scotchbrite pad adhesion promoter satin black aerosol

rub down with scotch pad one coat of adhesion promoter air dry for couple of mins and then straight on with the black

if colour coding and smoothing same process except after adhesion promoter apply high build primer allow to fully cure rub down with 400 dry or 800 wet then top coat

            Thanks,
I'm not sure what is the difference between adhesion promoter and a primer? (I simply never heard of adhesion promoter)

primer is coloured and requires rubbing down adhesion promoter is clear one good coat air dry in a couple of mins and you paint straight over it

(trust me im a painter lol)

                Really, thanks!
                So the steps are:

                1) Degreasing the part
                2) Rubbing with scotch pad
                3) One coat of adhesion promoter

Let it dry couple of minutes (10?)

                4) Painting over it with matte black

How many coats of matte black should I spray?

I would use satin black not matt as it will look crap. apply as many coats as you need to give you a nice even finish, 3 should be fine as a guide but the rest of the plan sounds good

You saved me there, I imagined the satin black and called it matte black... I definitely spraying satin black

And another question (As someone who is trying to learn), why did You choose scotch pad over wet and dry sanding? Is it to avoid harming the plastic surface texture?

yep that's the reason scotchbrite keys up the plastic enough without damage to the texture wet n dry is old technology in the bodywork trade these days

                        one more question:
If part of the bumper is color coded, and the upper part is still black plastic like this for example:

And I want to turn it all black, will any of the stages You mentioned before will be different considering that part of it is color coded?

you would just need to scotchbrite the already painted section
