It leaves a protective coating on the wheels so you get a nice beading effect, and it does a good job of cleaning the brake dust off but my problem is it's had to get to the back of the wheel to clean because of the spokes.
Ideally I want one that does a good job of breaking most of the crap down with minimal scrubbing.

I'v just bought some auto finesse iron out as i'v heard a few good reports about it. I can't rate it as I haven't used it yet, but my mate uses this and various brushes and it brings his wheels up gleaming.
I found a few sacks of all round cleaner at work, watered it down and it works a treat. Haven't cleaned my wheels in about a year and they came out as good as new. Best of all, it was completely free.
Autobrite Very Cherry. Can be diluted from 1:5 or 1:20 very good stuff!
Also autobrite purple rain.
Have many people comment on how clean the inside of my wheels are.

Does it involve scrubbing? Or just spray on rinse off?

no, not patio cleaner. It was in our tool hire department. the manager there has been cleaning his equipment (ooer!) with it for a good few months now.
I use a strong degreaser, watered down. Spray on, leave for 4-5 minutes, then wash off with the jet-wash

With no effort at all except washing off afterwards I use a pound shop engine degreaser. Never have to scrub just apply leave a minute then wash off, then spray on a wheel wax spray.
Is it PH neutral though? I imagine the cheap stuff could eat away at the lacquer and paint over time.

I respect the comment but no mate, it will not do any damage like that. I have used it for a few years on wheels I have refurbished including motorbike wheels never done any harm or damage, will just leave a white dust residue if not washed off right but can easily be wiped off.
