  • Returning faulty goods to Currys

On the 16th of last month we bought a TV and soundbar from Currys. Today whilst listening to music through the TV noticed the mid range sound very tinny, and the vocals really quiet compared to the rest of the sound. I swapped optical cables and it was the same, and I also used Bluetooth and it was the same, proving the unit faulty.

Problem is Currys reckon you can only return for an exchange within 21 days. Where do I stand?

That's b****cks. Sales of goods act says the retailer is responsible for a "reasonable amount of time". 21 days is more than reasonable :-)

Legally they're entitled to send it off for repair. But with it being close to that 21 days, they may let you swap it anyway

        What have they offered?

It's under garentee but yeah may have to be inspected and or sent off. Bit of a ball ache but I've argued the toss before and got a refund after 14days which is normally the limit. As sold me a ****ed laptop and just didn't want another. They sold me wrong model , had several faults.

Tim I haven't taken it in yet. It's across town so I don't want to mess around taking it in unless I'm prepared.

I don't want a refund, I just want it exchanged for a working unit. Can I insist on it being swapped?

I'd try to argue the toss with them to get it swapped. but you may get a militant git who will insist on following procedure, just flip out and get the manager involved

I'm trying not to get wound up about it, as we've spent a fair bit in there and the good have broken within 24 days. Not good. Just hoping they're civil about it.

Retailers must supply goods of saleable quality. Something which breaks within a month of purchase isn't of saleable quality - I'd say you've a good case to have it replaced.

I had this with Comet years ago with a washer which burnt the motor out - they insisted on having it repaired rather than replaced. I took it to Trading Standards who agreed with me.

So I'd check with Trading Standards before making further contact with them.

Just got out there. They swapped it no questions asked. Very surprised but really pleased with them.

AFAIK its 14days if you dont want the item, 30days if its faulty for direct replacement or RTM for anything after 30days within the 1 year garentee /or as far as any additonal cover you may have bought.
