The PS4 isn't backwards compatible via game discs, however it has a similar way if streaming games such as OnLive. You can buy older games from PS3 and below and download them, or stream them to your console.

As for special games, I'm looking forward to Drive Club, Killzone Shadow Fall, inFAMOUS Second son and COD Ghosts

That's a bit ****, might scupper my plans then if I can't play my ps3 games unless they offer a download for games you already own.

It's the same with the Xbox One too, pretty **** but it's all about money for them.

I get that. But surely less people will buy the console, if it was backwards compatible a load of ps3s would be on eBay as soon as the ps4 came out and people would be buying the new console. This means I'm going to have to buy a ps3 and a ps4

CEX are brilliant, buy most of my stuff from there because it's so cheap and still comes with a year return policy if any problems.

Happened with the 360 when it came out, then backwards compatibilty was added. Only one version PS3 was able to play ps2 games. Most people who buy a new console don't want to play older games.

As kingo said, get a cheap ps3 and run alongside a ps4. You'll probably find yourself using the ps3 a lot less than you think.

I won't use it much at all however it's the little one wanting to play skylanders that is the issue and its why I need a new ps3 in the first place. I'll take a look on CEX though, thanks.

If he wants to play Skylanders but you don't have a PS3/Xbox already he's not really losing out. Wait to buy Skylanders (there is a new one coming anyway, my wallet is ready... - Max has every Skylander that came out, it's cost a fortune) so you get one that is compatible.

I imagine the physical characters will still work in the next version of the game - original Skylanders work with Skylanders Giants so it would make sense to keep this pattern up.
I hope they are going to bring out a next gen console version of swap force, I have no intention of leaving the PS3 connected just for Skylanders...
