  • Continuing power problem after installing Windows 10

In August I installed Windows 10 on my Toshiba Satellite Pro laptop. I suspect there is something peculiar to my Toshiba that is causing an inconsistent problem with power & sleep management under Windows 10.

In the power & sleep settings both battery and mains the settings are all set to 'Never'. Even so the screen usually shuts down within a minute of me not touching the keyboard - eg if the phone rings by the time I've answered it and turn back to the computer to put something in the diary it's shut down. And it's not consistent. Sometimes it stays on for hours, most of the time it shuts down very quickly.

Before I installed Windows 10 the power & sleep settings worked fine, this has only happened since I upgraded.

Searching on Google it seems there was an update issued for power and sleep management soon after Windows 10 was released, but that now seems to have disappeared from the list of updates available.

    Any clues or suggestions?

(By the way I hate Toshiba kit - but it comes with the job)

OK - today it's spent all day not staying on more than 30 seconds after keys are pressed.

This evening it's stayed on for 3 hours.

    No change in settings.

    What's going on?

And now....it stays on permanently - or - it shuts the screen off after an hour or so but wakes up immediately.

Nothing has changed in the settings, it's just got a mind of its own.

Have you tried a clean install?

I recently updated my moms laptop to Windows 10 and it had a few issues with the various drivers not working.
I decided then to do a clean install and everything has worked properly since.

Microsoft recommend doing a clean install after the update anyway

A full clean install is a bit of a problem because we use software on licence from Microsoft and currently the account that authorizes the installation of things like Office isn't working. Maybe that's the only way I'm going to get it working again properly though so might just have to bite the bullet.

O marvellous - chuffing marvellous - it asks to update the graphics drivers and killed my screen. I use a monitor remote from the pc because the noise of the pc itself plays havoc with my tinnitus. Before I ran both the pc screen and the monitor - now that setting no longer works.

I reckon my Toshiba just can't handle the drivers Windows 10 wants to use. Funny thing is that the power issue has now been resolved - it stays on 24 / 7 unless I tell it do otherwise. I think I'll keep it going until they start selling base units with Windows 10 installed (not risking buying another one with a free upgrade) and then change it.

Seems if you take a Toshiba laptop with an Intel HD4000 graphics card and add Windows 10 the end result is much sadness and woe. I've spoken with a few people who have the same bit of kit and are having the same problems.

Ah well - never liked Toshiba anyway.

Nope - I haven't a time. I'll have to put it back to Windows 7 as it is now clear that it isn't compatible with Windows 10.

I'll do it on 21st Oct 2015 and put a new flux capacitor in as well.

It's worth trying a clean install. I had to do it on both mine and my my moms laptop.
Try it on a spare HDD. Make the bootable media and give it a blast. It solved loads of driver errors on my moms laptop

Today I wiped the hard drive and re-installed everything from scratch using Windows 7. It now works perfectly.

I also took Windows 10 off my wife's laptop and put it back to Windows 7. That is now a lot quicker.

                          So much for progress.

Interesting to note that on my wife's old HP now it's back on Windows 7 the free upgrade for Windows 10 has come back on it. On my much newer Toshiba it hasn't - which makes me think they've realised it isn't compatible.

Sod it! It worked fine for a whole day. This morning it updated Windows and opens with "Missing operating system."
