I would say something like the Nikon D3300. I bought the predecessor, the D3200 for my sister and have no complaints at all. Can be bought from palces such as currys etc on the high street.

D3200 is what I've just been looking at, looks quite nice. Dave what does the D3300 give over the D3200?

And Tim it'll turn off at about 2 (maybe 4) but you can disable it in your profile if you wish

Slightly bigger sensor in terms of MP. Higher ISO levels available. The main thing though. Is it will record 1080p video at 60fps. As opposed to 30fps of the 3200.

Also has features such as panorama mode which the 3200 doesn't. Continuous shoot us at 5fps as opposed to 4fps of the 3200.

Meant to be much higher battery life too.

              It's just better. And newer.

Of course that's reflected in the price though...

Soph has the D3200. Not a bad bit of kit. Does most of what you'd want.

I've got a cheapy remote for it that just plugs in too, they're easy to get hold of.

Buy NIKON D3200 DSLR Camera with 18-55 mm f/3.5-5.6 VR II Telephoto Zoom Lens | Free Delivery | Currys

Or in Argos there are 2 variations...
Buy Nikon D3200 24MP DSLR Camera with 18-55mm Kit - Black at Argos.co.uk - Your Online Shop for Digital SLR cameras.
                    and
Buy Nikon D3200 24MP DSLR Camera with 18-55mm Lens - Black at Argos.co.uk - Your Online Shop for Digital SLR cameras.

The first one appears to have a stabilised lens - any idea if the Currys one would too? VR appears to be vibration reduction so I'd assume that to be image stabilisation?

Doesn't look worth the extra for what I'll use it for, thanks though

Thats ok, was just more firmly in your price range than the odler D3200. I have nothing but good things to say about the 3200 either tbh, as said bought one for sister, I use it often instead of my aging D40x. They are solid cameras at a good price point.

By the time I add memory card, remote etc it's a little more than I'd like to spend. I'm buying this on a whim really, I've always missed my DSLR

What did you have before? They're great to have even if you're not massively into photography imo, decent quality camera is a great asset to keep around at times

My only real critiscism of the D3200 is you can't review the histogram before you take the photo. So to get the right light levels it sometimes takes a bit of trial and error. Not sure if that's the same on most cameras or not though.
