  • central heating help

I've got a problem that has cropped up over the past few days with my CH.

The thermostat clicks on and off, but the boiler doesn't come on. I can switch the boiler onto constant, it'll start and then heat the house up.

I've swapped the old stat with a new one, but still the same issue, it clicks but no heat.

Any suggestions as to what might be wrong?

What type of boiler is it? Is it a combi or do you have a copper tank somewhere? If it works when you put it on constant, that eliminates pretty much everything apart from the timer.

Yep. I'd say timer too. Contactor inside it will have seized open.
Most external time clocks share a common backplate so you can easily change it yourself. If its internal to the boiler, then it's a bit more involved, but not too difficult.

it was the timer. A power surge had funked it up somehow. Cheers for the tips guys!

Rather than start a new thread:

My mams houses heating has been playing, the boiler dos have low pressure but that has now been increased however she can only heat upstairs or downstairs at a time. If the upstairs radiators are off the downstairs heats up and if the downstairs radiators are off only upstairs heats up.

If all radiators are on the upstairs heats and the downstairs doesn't. Any ideas?

It either needs the system balancing properly or there's a restriction on the system caused by either muck in the rads/pipework or a lazy pump. Water takes the easiest route so if there's for example 10 rads, and 5 have a slight build up of muck in them, it will whizz around the ones without the restrictions first. It may be a case of having the system power flushed. Take the smallest radiator downstairs off and empty it in a bucket and it will give you an idea of what you're dealing with.

Thanks Lee, I'll see if my mam will let me do that or wants to get a professional

Think she may try British Gas to get a repairer out, the last person who came out didn't fix it and then won't answer his phone.

Typical plumber. They'll take on easy obvious work, but run for the hills when it involves using their brains.

That is 100% what he did, he came round for a 'service' then headed for the bills when he found out there was a problem.
