I'm guessing you won't be running a graphics card and already have a hard drive sorted?

If you're going to use integrated graphics, i'd recommend changing to one of the "K" series i5 chips. They have the ability to make onboard GPU pretty good and aren't that much more.f
The i5 chip you listed is 2.9Ghz in title, but in the description it says 3.6Ghz?

    Everything else seems fine

I guess I should have made my use of it a bit clearer

Basically this will be a headless machine so onboard graphics are more than enough. I chose the motherboard/CPU combination for the vPro feature (they both support it) - not sure the K model would.

I chose the case as it should keep everything quiet and has plenty of disk slots.

3.6GHz is the turbo boost speed, 2.9GHz is the normal speed:

If you have any specific things you'd swap out let me know what and why, I haven't clicked order yet

Nah, all seems above board for most things i'd imagine.
Maybe a Corsair H series liquid cooler, but that's only because i like it nice and quiet.

I need it to be almost silent but will see how it is with stock cooler, can always change it

Ordered the lot, hopefully it'll work better than my Microserver

Good, I'll look forward to that. Especially if it's quiet

Haha, quite a few people are looking forward to it, it's much more powerful, hopefully I can finally silence it for 24/7 use

What's the server for? What was the spec of the Microserver?

Mainly a Plex server, Microserver was a dual core 2.2GHz AMD thing, 10GB RAM

Cheers for the input on this peeps, I've got all the bits now and run through a noise test today - I'm very happy with how quiet it is. Tomorrow I'll finish building it (got 5 more hard drives to fit in it, plus some cable tidying).

The CPU cooler that comes with the CPU looks a little weedy, not sure I want to trust it, can anyone recommend a larger (and crucially, quiet) cooler? It's socket 1150 and I have plenty of space in the case.

Also - I decided to use the fan controller on the case, do you think I should take that out and let the motherboard decide how fast to spin the fans? Seems sensible as it knows what temperature it is at...

I did a benchmark of old server before shutting it down, hopefully new one will beat it...

Here's some cooling options from ccl CPU Coolers, AMD Coolers, Intel Coolers, Heatsinks and Fans - CCL Computers
I'll double check which one I have but it's been really good.

I'd also definitely allow the board to control the case fan.

I might as well carry on using this thread for pc building stuff.

The wifes laptop is getting on now. the unit itself is immaculate with a pretty decent screen and the keyboard is still good.
I want to build a Pc, then have it run on the laptop, using the monitor and keyboard? Is that possible at all?
