  • Black Tie Event

I'm off to a black tie event tonight. Can I wack a bow tie on with my normal black suit and white shirt or do I need a special jacket?

Also I'm guessing cigars and whiskey are mandatory

If that was the case I wouldn't need to buy it I'd just get put in it.

What's the main differences? How can you tell.

I might have a quick look in matalan.

Simple for me. Military dress uniform with miniature medals. Simples.

The trousers of a dinner suit will have a black satin down the sides. Jacket can be double or triple breasted and a specific shirt is used. Don't ask me the reasons for the shirt, but it's a special one for the suit.

A bow tie will make you look like a bit of a div with a normal suit tbh.

Yup - Dinner Jacket is what you want. Don't buy a cheap one, it'll look pants (no puns intended). If it's a one off event hire a decent one.

And a wing collar shirt, preferably with studs.

And a cummerbund - not red or other silly colours. Most guys go for black, mine is a silver and black check which actually looks a lot better than it sounds.
