  • HTC One M8 or Samsung Galaxy S5?

Upgrade time for me now and looking to get a new handset.
The above two are the only two i'm considering just now but trying to decide what one i want.

    HTC One M8
    Good points
    Screen displays colours more naturally.
Nice build quality with the aluminium body.
5MP front facing camera with HDR mode.
    Sense enhanced GUI

    Bad points
    Non removeable battery
Poor reputation for build quality compared to Samsung.
    Not water resistant.

    Samsung Galaxy S5
    Good points
    Fingerprint scanning for Paypal etc.
16MP rear camera and 4k video recording
Water resistant up to 1 meter and 30 minutes
    Removeable battery
    Lighter than the M8

    Bad points
Touchwiz enhanced GUI is slow feeling compared to HTC's Sense
Front facing camera is only 2MP with no HDR mode
    Cheaper feeling than the M8

What would others pick from the two above and why?

I've had few HTC and think build quality has been spot on although maybe not as robust as I now have a plastic one. Doesn't feel ss good as metal one with removable battery I had prior so can see we agree on the negatives.

    What's your current?

I'm due upgrade soon and was thinking Samsung until I saw the new HTC, I would probably stick to HTC to a point as I've had a few ive been happy with and my previous Samsung were **** but this was long ago.

Not much of a reason to sway I know but I also prefer the HTC menu compared to my Samsung tablet menu and controls but this is also a very light reason.

I have insurance now so don't worry about battery removal and water resistance much

You played with them both in store? That usually makes my mind up right away

Just noticed the LG G3 is due to come out in a few months and is higher spec yet again but

Using an S3 just now. It's still half decent but it's really suffering with only 1GB of RAM on KitKat

Used to like LG phones actually often overlooked but can't comment on what they are like now.

Forgot all about the Sony Experia Z2 as well.

Going to have a play about with them all in the shop at work on Wednesday i think and try and decide before then.
Z2 has 3GB of RAM vs 2GB on the other two as well as a 20MP Sony Camera so could be the one....

I've had two HTC's and find their products to be ok. My experience with samsung has only been using other peoples and i can't say i like it. There's just something about them that doesn't appeal to me.

Do you really need a waterproof phone?

What is it about those phones that put it above something like a nexus 5?

Nexus 5 is really good as well but on my staff contract, all the phones are the same price so wanted one with the best features.
After looking at them again the HTC One M8 is out the game (poor camera compared to the other 2) and it's going to be a toss up between the Xperia Z2 or Galaxy S5
Z2 looks like it might be the one but will need to play around with both to make sure.

I do a lot of mountain biking and camping and although i use protective cases on my phones, there's always the worry of it raining or getting wet some other way.
Would mean no worry at all about using it in the rain to take videos or pictures as well.

Ah, fair enough. May as well get your money's worth out of them.

I would probably go for the xperia, looks good and they tend to have the best cameras

Yeah One X is out the game now so going to play around with the Xperia and the S5.
Only downsides i can see to the Xperia so far is the shape means if you sit down with it in your pocket the edges might feel a bit stabby, and it's maybe a bit on the large. Clutching at straws to find bad points about it though.

I have the Xperia Z and my dad has the Z1, and also looking at the Z2 it'll be exactly the same.
It really isn't stabby at all really, Edges are quite smoothed out and feels quite nicely made. Even though I have the first generation of the Z phones I absolutely love mine, Never have any problems. Fast enough to play GTA San Andreas and easy to use. Also comes with a whole load of free Sony stuff too which has its benefits.

Went with the Samsung S5 in the end. Bit unhappy with the size of it, but didn't have much choice sadly. Bigger than my S3 and that's already bigger than my ideal.

Still setting it up just now. Much prefer the feel of the S3, but first impressions on the performance is pretty good.
Be good to get to test out the camera on it. That was the main thing i was after.

There's meant to be a new Samsung out in a few months which is rumoured to be like an S5 premium but i didn't want to hold off in case it was a let down
