Why is it called 'Central' heating when my boiler is on the garage and the radiators are at the sides of the rooms.

And worst thread of the week goes to ...

'Central' isnt necessarily referring to the central geometric point of the house, but rather that the heat comes from ine point ie your boiler a furnace etc, the distributed around the house. the boiler is the central point of heat

Central heating was invented by native N. American Indians.

They lit a fire in the middle of their tepee.

      Simples.

Very interesting and well thought out although I believe Taurus' answer is actually the correct one (this is mainly because I assume he was round to see it invented...)

That is true, but it doesn't negate the fact that central heating has a long history which means that other forms of central heating are equally validly referred to a central heating. Central heating as we know it today consists of a system whereby heat generation is circulated by various means. Most commonly that consists of a furnace / boiler heating water which is then pumped around radiators. Heat may also be transferred by alternative means - eg blown air. Many large buildings have a furnace connected to a heat exchanger over which air is blown and then circulated via a system of vents.

However previous central heating system include, for example, the Roman system of underfloor air heating, rising through channels in the walls and venting through the roof. Effectively the whole room was surrounded by warm air heating the floor, walls and ceiling. Hence no cold downdraughts. In medieval times monasteries used similar systems which used water channels.

There is therefore no single definition of what central heating consists of. Nor is it a solely an invention of our modern world. Our ancestors were pretty smart when it came to keeping themselves warm.

Look how wrong you are now, without asking the question I would never have learnt that interesting history from Taurus, there's no such thing as a silly question, only silly answers

That sir, is below the belt. It's freezing here. So cold I can't work on the Viva as I just can't get the garage warm enough to spray.

The grass is always always greener.... (except yours is probably crispy & brown).

I've given up on fan heaters, I've installed a couple of halogens in the garage, lovely and toasty in there now. Still can't spray though as with the doors shut it's just a case of whether I blow up or die from fumes.
