  • [Traitor Car] 71' Mk1 Escort 4AGE 20V

Hey guys, I’ve been lurking on here for a couple of months following Small9918’s fiesta project and watching the great response its had, and also been having a look at some of the other projects on here. After my first post Small sussed who I was and told me to me to start a thread on mine asap so here is a little background.

I’ve owned my Mk1 Escort since March 2006, its current undergoing a full restoration and rebuild but it has been painfully slow due to money, time and now-ex-girlfriends but pace has been picking up over the last year or so.

To keep the spec list short and sweet the finished car will be Mk1 escort 4 door ‘1100L’ but with all the goodies underneath and inside, race/rally suspension, Hispec brakes front and rear, plated LSD, straight cut box, caged, bucket seats, harnesses, plumbed in fire extinguisher, rally fuel tank. I could go on!

But it is the engine where this car comes into play! To begin with I will have this:
    Chassis mounted Toyota 4AGE Blacktop 20V – 1600cc with 165bhp, 8600rpm limiter and 45mm ITB’s as standard
    Running on Omex 600 ECU

However this engine is only temporary until the proper one is built over the next couple of years, I’m not willing to share specs just yet though but it will be a 20V 4AGE, the target is 250bhp and a rev limit of around 10,000 rpm
And no this isn’t just pub talk! The bar has just been set at 251bhp in America and I am hoping to achieve the same with a very similar spec. I’m currently collecting parts from all over the world so when I have all my bottom end components together I shall share abit more as to the spec

    Anyway onto some photos!

Here are the pictures from the original advert, the car was stored in a Honda garage in Chester for 2 years before I got hold of her.

And a few better ones from when it was collected:

The car stayed like this for the next 4 years or so for reasons stated above, a little bit of work here and there but it flew through its MOT's with advisories on brakes and windscreen washers every single year. Funny because brakes are drums all round with no servo assistance, and a foot operated washer pump, so of course they would never be up to modern standards

Then I bit the bullet and started doing some proper work on the car....

I'm breaking this down into a few posts so bear with me

My dad had a Mk1 Escort Estate. I only remember it as it was bright yellow , haha.

I always like a good classic

So first things first! Remove this old reliable lump. 1100cc and 44bhp pretty nippy and always started second time

Gearbox and prop had to come out too

        ]"]Photo Storage

Had to check the new boots would look ok

Then front suspension out so the crossmember can be changed out:

Deal with this later, but see how many plates you can count, originally there was 2!

Time to look at the engine and make sure it will fit first, all of the unnecessary pumps and hoses were removed and the itb's taken off too.

Sump clearance, no ideal as the engine sits to high, but lower the rack and the engine can be dropped a bit more!

        Looking quite at home really.

So to make the engine fit, I sourced some parts from America, what this block does is relocates the thermostat housing to a vertical arrangement rather than sticking out like sore thumb from the back of the engine but about 6 inches, thus meaning no bulkhead cutting.

          ]"]Photo Storage

The downside of this setup is that I end up having the rad flow and return pipes running down the side of the engine, but oh well its no biggy.

          ]"]Photo Storage

Bellhousing so I can run a ford type 9, 5 speed gearbox which is a very common upgrade on the escorts rather than a toyota AE86 T50 box which is rare as. This is for two reasons really, type 9's are a well supported box, loads of them, lots of spares, gearkits etc at sensible prices but it also means upgrading the box later on can be done by getting a type 9 replacement box from companies such as a Sadev, Elite, Quaife etc should I ever wish to go for a sequential :P

          ]"]Photo Storage

          Anyway back to business!

          Interior out

          ]"]Photo Storage

          ]"]Photo Storage

And the first exploratory incision, you'll see why I'm cutting what a looks like a pretty mint car to pieces soon.

          ]"]Photo Storage

Not much left of the original inner wing strut top at all!

            So I went poking around...

Removed the rear arch repair which had been pop riveted on, same on the nearside too but i didnt remove the panel as the other one covered the workshop in a layer of dust due to the stupid amount of filler...

Checked the interior floor pan, nice and solid

Ok maybe not quite but this is a common place for them to go.

Now time for the splash panel to be removed as it was rotten top and bottom.

Then I had these turn up, so that means I have to do some more cutting!

            Slam panel off

            front panel off

            BIG cut!!

Quick check on the fit of the new panel, wasnt to bad really.

Time to get the bulkhead sorted ready for this panel, angles had to be correct though:

            Check again

            ...

Checked the front panel to make sure it was all lined up.

Received my lowered rack world cup crossmember. This is strengthened more than standard crossmembers and the steering rack mounts are lower down to allow for sump clearance, however lowering the rack induces bump steer due to the track control arms on the strut and track rod ends on the rack no longer being parallel, so you need to fit cranked steering arms to correct the geometry! These have also been gusseted for extra strength. You will also notice the crossmember has no engine mounts, that is because I am chassis mounting the engine

              Back to the welding!

              Strut top on

              Splash panel on

Now time to start looking at the strut cut which mounts under the inner wing, just a quick look at this for now.

Time for the ITB's to get a look in!

              Completely dismantled.

              ]"]Photo Storage

Soda blasted left and before on the right

              ]"]Photo Storage

              Add some paint

              ]"]Photo Storage

              ]"]Photo Storage

              Start rebuilding

              ]"]Photo Storage

              ]"]Photo Storage

              ]"]Photo Storage

              Add some bling

              ]"]Photo Storage

              ]"]Photo Storage

              ]"]Photo Storage

              ]"]Photo Storage

Now time to mount them back on the manifold, just need to finish the linkages and they will be sent off with the old engine loom to RAW Engineering to sort the Omex 600 system out and check and adjust the ITB's to suit inc engine idle, tps etc.

              ]"]Photo Storage

              ]"]Photo Storage

Back to the task in hand, strut cup welded in now too!

              ]"]Photo Storage

              ]"]Photo Storage

              ]"]Photo Storage

Still a little more to come guys!

So you remember those white wellers that Small9918 had on his mk1 fiesta?

They are mine Here is how they look on an escort

Also whilst everything else had been going on, I had a fuel tank arrive, this is baffled and has a built in swirl pot ready for fuel injection

                Also a mocal oil cooler

Genuine Tomei fpr and gauge, the ebay specials are just scary!

And I'll throw in some shots of my roll cage for good measure

Also spent some time making this to allow my radiator to fit nicely, I have a large alloy rad going in to make sure the engine stays cool enough.

Finally to keep the axle in check I purchase this kit from Milton Race Preparation, A-frame axle location, it was originally used on the lotus cortina for circuit racing and was developed by the Milton guys for anglia hot rods on the short oval circuits as the lotus design put too much strain on the diff casing. It reduces body over axle roll which means the axle will remain square to the shell during cornering and a side effect of this is anti tramp. Tramping is where the wheels bounce up and down and you fwd boys may notice this when you do a wheel skid and you hear a god awful banging coming from the spinning wheel as it tries to get traction and grips then loses it again.

But still have the joys of fitting these as they require the rear axle to be completely dismantled

So that pretty much brings me up to date!

Cheers for the positive comments already

Thank you for all the kind comments guys. It really is a boost to get some good feedback, after having so little on the escort forums because its a 4 door

Funnily enough I chose the 4 door over a 2 door for a couple of reasons 6 and half years ago, yes cost did play a part but they are rare. At classic ford this year I saw three mk1 4door escorts out of over 100 mk1's that were there. And at some local events I saw 1 in 30 odd, of which 2 were genuine 'super rare' rs1600's, go figure that one . The 4 door escorts have been down played and have and still are sacrificed to ensure the 2 doors are kept on the roads unfortunately.

Still I'd choose my 4 door over a 2 door, and I cant be biased....I have ended up with both!

So without diverting my thread too much....here is the other mk1 escort I have, 1700xflow was dropped in a month back but have had starter motor problems so it hasnt been started yet, has a 1600 sport gearbox, quaife quickshift. The black mexico steels are going on so I can fit those nice beefy brakes on the front as it has drums on the front at the moment. The struts I had, the brake calipers came off the back of my mates rally car. And the interior is staying

But this isnt getting any more attention bar the engine and brakes until my 4 door is done!
