  • [Traitor Car] Renault 5 gt turbo restoration thread

bought this back in april cheap with the plan to restore it back to its former glory it was abit rusty and unloved but its currently on axel stands heartless and ready for its transplant once the engine is built back up i was told it had a slight bottom end ''tap'' sounded like a tractor though lol the car aparntly has 79k on it according to the clocks it has one rusty sill and a few more bits that have been taken care off now

    heres some pics

engine was abit fubberd bottom end bearings had gone crank was dead as it was ground down before once it was striped down i found it had been rebuilt before badly the bearings where .25 over size in every cylinder apart from one

    pi
this is the welding work i have pics of at the moment more has been done just haven't got pics of it

i do have the whole car doors bonnet seats windows and what not just in storage for now engine build so far has low comp pistons piper 285 cam need a t25 turbo lightened and balanced flywheel and a few other bits it came with samco hoses as the pics show and a full stainless exhaust looks like 2.5 inch turbo back looking for around 230bhp out of it once its set up right

                You're a brave man.

Interesting project - re. colour, I seem to remember that back in the day they only came in that kind of brick red shade. Maybe there were other colours available for that spec, but most of them seemed to go for the red.

progress!! so today i have been sanding grinding cutting drilling and welding but here it is

                  start of the day

                  cleaned up my pistons

                  block painted

sanded back the filler across the welds painted (apparently the chemicals in filler on to bare metal help rust and it needs another skim)

now enough of that boring stuff sill time cut it off was rusted all the way down cleaned up the inner sill and patched in some new metal with no tin worm

all that was well and good so put the new sill on only tacks at the moment going to put the doors on make sure it lines up right

happy with this so far i get to do the other side tomorrow and stip the dash loom out the other side is not as far gone as this side was only needs 4 inch of new metal by the looks of it

its not going to be factory wanting a full roll cage 2 bucket seats in side flocked dash and carbonfiber door cards inside and out respray but keeping the standard bumpers other then the cut out for a front mount intercooler and scorpion exhaust that i got with it bigger brakes and maybe ronal turbos or borbet A's

picked the crank up yesterday .25 mm grind all over just need rings and rod bolts to turn up struggling to find up rated rod bolts though other then with forged rods so if the money for the forged rods come up i may well just do that...
