  • Astra SRI CDTI

After my golf was turned down by insurers, I decided to look at ST TDCIs but the potential for injectors and DMF have scared the **** out of

So whilst driving the works astra tonight I started to think, I actually really like it. It looks nice, it has a nice driving position, seats are comfortable although the interior does let it down slightly and I it looks good from the outside.

So they seem to do two in the SRI trim, 120 or 150...obviously I would go for the 150. Is it a good engine? Is there a better engine to go for, 2.0t maybe?

I've read the 150 can be remapped to a round 200?

Is the sri the best trim to go for? What benefit does the SRI give?

I love the 888, but a 5k premium for brakes, wheels and a fancy sticker seems a bit much.

What mods would people do to these?

As far as i know power wise, they get to around 190bhp with a piggyback ecu alone, but sometimes can do more.
I don't think the ecu is mapable without the piggyback ecu Bluefin and a rolling road means you could have a piggyback ecu with a custom map more suited to your needs.

Sri is the only one that has the 150bhp engine AFAIK. remaps can be had up to 220bhp. All in all, a decent car. test drove one before, not bad. finding one that hasn't been abused is a challenge. Have you considered a 2.0 tdci focus? 146 bhp standard, remaps are similar, cheaper to insure than an Sri, parts are dirt cheap.

Are the focus's (foci?) 146bhp standard, remap to 200? If so then I'll take a look as I think they could better equipped as standard. The thing that puts me off from the Astra is no leather and lack of some equipment

Apologies. the newer focii have those figures. older focus (2005-2010) have 134bhp and some have no dpf. can be remapped to 170 ish with the same tourqe as the astra's.

You can swap the turbo for an ST tdci one and uprate the intercooler.

Seems like a lot of work. Daft as it sounds I want a round 200bhp as from cars I've had previously it's a nice figure to have, quick when needed but not overly fast. 40+ mpg would be nice as well

What kind if skoda? I'm guessing Leon 2.0 gt tdi 170? I've already had to pay to get the DPF removed on one of them engines

The Astra seems to max at 240bhp with a lot of work, whereas a remap will get you 200 I don't think the extra 40bhp is worth the costs.

I think the 2.0 vag tdi 170 is just out of budget the 140 is within but I think there is a big difference?

Yeah he kept getting recharge DPF light on it every week or so.

Yeah 200 is easy to reach on vauxhalls tbh. But with diesel's it's how they deliver it and 200 is quite an enjoyment you just pay a lot to get more than that.

Payed for my old mans to get done 120 bhp vecrtra now it's 152.4 and thats the 8v vectra. Put a smile on my face and created white knuckles for him, when the power come in but it was far far more smoother delivered to the wheels.

I've said it before and I'll say it again - those GM CDTi engines are great when they go well, and horribly expensive when they go wrong.

If the ST TDCi put you off think very carefully about the Astra - the later 2.0 version has the same issues. In terms of the 120 vs the 150 - the 120 doesn't go wrong as often, which suggests that re-mapping for more power will influence reliability.

Which is why a lot of guys won't buy a modern diesel.

When the next set of Euro regs re diesels come into force I suspect we'll see a lot less of them in production.

If I could find a quickish petrol that will do 40mpg, 35 average I would buy it.
