I am owner of 1999 Opel Corsa B 1.5 TD, and I love it!

Even though my Corsa is a mediocre at reliability, has mediocre handling and has mediocre ride, I happen to fall in love with it, and plan to keep it forever I plan to keep it as a second car, even after I buy a new car. It is a beautiful thing to have a car that is all mechanical, and doesn't have ecu, and not one sensor of any type, at these days of electronic age. You know that while you are fixing your new car, you will always have a car that will start at first turn of the key, that is easy to drive around town, that you can park anywhere, that is very cheap to repair, the fuel consumption is very low and the engine is just eager to please you while its purrs beautifully like a cat.


Lets dedicate this one thread for our car. Let's count the numbers of 1.5 TD Corsa left in this world. If you happen to own the non turbo version, sign in anyway. Say a word or two, how do you feel about you car

I still own one technically, but it's not been started in a few years though and had a back end smash before then
Only 100k on the engine but will be getting scrapped soon

100k is nothing for this engine. Repair it and take it back to the road

What is the power of that thing?
What is you average mpg?
Size of the turbo lag?

45mpg round town, 55-65 on motorways
Turbo kicks in at about 1800rpm

Lets say you are cruzing around town in 3rd gear at 2000rpm, and you floor the throttle. How many seconds to maximum boost? I am interested in throttle response time.

Maximum boost is just shy of 3000rpm and it'd only take 1-2 seconds maybe

1-2 seconds is excellent. the 1.5td lump takes 5-6 seconds in the same scenario, its laggy.

Old diesels are laggy, but your diesel is not old, it is direct injection (but not common rail). diesels are very responsive engines, just ask Hardcore, hes got the best engine in the world.

I hate driving diesels tbh. Nearly all my experience is vans though. Always seem to lag when you need power most, like pulling onto a roundabout.
Most of my mileage is in the same van too (62 plate Berlingo 1.6HDI) and I still haven't got used to it.
My boss has a VW Transporter Sportline (180bhp biturbo) and he says exactly the same.

Petrol all the way for me I'm afraid. That said, I don't do many personal miles. If I did I guess I'd learn to live with the lag for the mpg.

There's not a lot of lag from mines. Turbo spools up from about 1600rpm and reaches full boost around 2100rpm. It's only 130bhp but the 229lbs/ft of torque is what makes it fun to drive. Looking forward to about 200bhp and 340lbs/ft later down the line

I second that. No lag from TDI PD engines, 101, 116 and 130 bhp. Just floor the throttle and 0.5 seconds later you get maximum boost and in many cases tires on the road. Common rail engines are more laggy than PD engines.
