Best mate had the 1.4 mk4 and now has the 1.6 mk5, both eat fuel around town and achieve around 40mpg on a good run. Personally feel like the mk4 is quite a boring car inside and blends in with the ever day car.
Both feel underpowered but comfort is above what the corsa gives. Certain parts can be pricy and I know on his mk4 1.4 the hydraulic lifters were in their way out which vw told him can be one of the faults at higher millage (could be different on the 1.6 mk4 but the engines are very similar)
Have you considered other cars?Last edited by Sam_Sri; 12-08-2013, 06:30 PM.

A friend of mine had the 1.4 and had numerous problems with that engine, but I've not read any horror stories about the 1.6 16v. I've read it's better than the 1.4 and 1.6 8v.
Not really sure what else to consider within the price range. Astras are boring, Leons are ugly, Focus's feel cheap inside. What else is there?

Oh really? Fair enough mate!
And well how about this?

I'd given Volvos a brief thought but not really looked into Saabs. Will look further, but I like that with the Golf there is a certain amount of basic modding I can do to it if I wish; I won't really get that with a Saab. Surprised at how cheap they can be though. How are they in terms of reliabilty?

The petrol turbos are not bad what so ever, hybrid turbos are easy to pick up along with and intercooler and exhaust a decent map will see strong power. Stick some really nice alloys on and maybe lower a little and it will look smart!
He's had the 1.8t on an 06 plate which never missed a beat and was a good all round car with decent economy, current 1.9tid is an 04 plate which has asked for a few pricy parts after inlet failure but this was revised on the 05+ models. 47mpg on long runs and 35mpg around town, been remapped to 190bhp with 385nm of torque and it pulls like a train!
Have you considered Alfa? This is high spec and in your budget Error Page | eBay

Wouldn't trust Alfa reliability lol. Can't afford hefty bills so reliability needs to be quite high on the list.

Would rather have something a bit larger. Plus I don't really want to be fiddling about with or paying for remaps.

I completely understand and agree with what you've said, however I won't go into the ins and outs of everything but it will be hard for me to save any money from my earnings for potentially the first few months, but I do get a starting bonus which will be able to go towards a car.
This is why I'm relatively limited. However I have just stumbled across the Yaris 1.5 T Sport, which although isn't very big, seems to offer good performance coupled with strong reliability.
