  • Cat or de-cat

First post on the new site, no one replied on AC

Looking at getting a new exhaust for the sport (probably Sportex). Current setup is de-cat pipe into Powerflow centre section into Rage back box. My question is which would sound nicer, a de-cat pipe with centre silencer or vise versa having a cat with a straight through centre section.

    All comments appreciated

My corsa with a decat and straight through center section and piper backbox wasnt that loud,
Its not really a question people can answer people might not like exhaust sounds that you do, best bet is to try what you want and change it if you dont like it

The cat does very little to change the noise of the exhaust but can sometimes make it a bit more tinny or raspy without.
I think sports manifold (4-2-1) > normal cat > sports centre section > sports back box is the set up i'd go for.

Depends also on whether your going for a mild steel or stainless steel system and how deep your pockets are.

I had a stainless decat with sportex catback (mild steel system) this was disgustingly loud and raspy with awful cabin drone.

Binned the sportex and paid out for a piper stainless steel cat back system (still with stainless decat). This is a dream, drive along normally and you wouldn't think the only silencer was the backbox, only when you boot it you get a deep bark which turns into a crisp rasp up the rev range and pops all over the place (Liam on here can vouch for the noise).

It's worth to pay out that little extra and you get a whole lot more

Decat made a massive difference on my focus I recon doubled the noise

I thought this was a thread about murdering or not murdering a cat

This is a video of my old brocade 1.6 sport. Had a sportex "race" system on it. Straight through middle section. 3" backbox.

From personal experience there's a big difference. I have 2 videos in my project thread somewhere of stainless vs mild, or go on my photobucket and they are there somewhere

The sound difference i'd imagine comes mostly from the design, shape and materials used inside the silencer, not from the material the exhaust is made from.

Yeh I don't think it's actually the metal that changes the sounds. Although I do think generally that stainless systems are raspier... But I'd say this is down to silencer design, not just because its stainless..
