  • New Astra

Got a brand new 66 reg 1.4 turbo Astra SRi for a couple of days.

Turns out it's a cracking engine with amazing punch for its size. Overall it's a nice car; I'm fairly impressed.

Had a 1.6 n/a Focus last week that was a pathetic pile of turd. Genuinely think it was the worst engine I've experienced. Marginally better build quality, nicer gearbox and slightly better handling though.

Just thought I'd share my cool story.

I'm not sure of the look of them, why did you have one? Considering new car options?

I think they look pretty smart. Nicer than the Astra J for sure - they're a bit podgy. The K has a more aggressive look to it. The rear in particular is much nicer I think.

No, got them as hire cars through work as I've been on a training course off-site the last couple of weeks.

I've completely fallen in love with the engine though. So impressive the performance they can get out of modern units. Absolutely effortless to overtake and the 6 speed gearbox means you can cruise along comfortably at higher speeds.

The SRi has a sport mode which makes the throttle very sensitive, amongst other things. Very fun when driving through the peak district.

Yeah the gear change isn't the best. Just doesn't feel very precise. The Focus gear change had a far more purposeful feel to it.

What issue is that with the engine? I got given this one with only 300 miles on the clock so no issues yet lol.

As far as I'm aware moses the small engine turbos are high oil consumption causing premature timing chain wear

My brothers got an auto 1.6 focus and the gearbox is utterly dreadful.
My experience of small turbo engines, mainly the 1.0 Fiesta is theyre nice to drive, but fuel consumption is way higher than quoted.
              Ours said 65mpg, we're averaging about 40.

I have to say that when I looked at replacing the family car it was a choice between the 1.4 turbo or a 1.8 n/a - the 1.8 n/a is a much nicer drive and far less fussy.

I am not a huge fan of the trend for small turbo engines to replace larger n/a units.

Yeah I got mid 30s out of it over ~185 miles, so not the most efficient. Being a rental I wasn't driving with economy in mind, but still. I thrashed the hell out of the Focus because you had to in order to get anywhere, but still got low 40s.

The Astra had a far more capable and effortless engine but is seemingly more thirsty!

I think if you sit at a constant 50mph and drive like a nun, then yes the small turbos are great on fuel, but in the real world, where you're having to give it boost to get anywhere, the bigger engines are better.
I read the other day that Nissan and VW are both ditching their small 3 cylinder diesels for this reason.
