What do people think to these cars? Anyone know of any common faults or things to look for when buying one?

Do they use the same engine or running gear as the Mazda 6 MPS?
Only bad thing i can think of is fuel with them since you're coming from a diesel. My friend with the 6 MPS gets about 24mpg on the motorway and about 14 or less around town and that's driving normal.
Flooring it you can almost watch the needle going down

The mazda 3 is a pretty nice car. Autotrader says its the cheapest car to own for 5 years out of all brands. But the parts can be a little on the expensive side depending. Maintenance stuff is cheap, but mechanical and big pieces like the blocks and heads are pricey.

Thirsty but good cars. Expensive parts though apparently, that's why most go for a Focus ST.Big clear out of parts
