    Liam's Nova 1.6 16v (x16xe) Project

Hi guys, just joined and have decided to add my projects thread onto here.

I've owned my Nova since July 2010 and since then it has undergone 2 resprays and an x16xe engine conversion.

I'll just add a couple of bits below, but if you want to read the full thread it's on PNG at: <<CLICK HERE>>

Here is the pictures from when I bought it in July 2010 on eBay for 400.

First respray in September 2011. The whole car except from the engine bay painted Post Office red and the front end was converted to a Mk1.

I passed my driving test a couple of weeks before the car was finished and was eager to get driving! When it was finally done I got it insured, taxed and MOT'd and I was ready to actually drive it for the first time! A week later I lowered the car by 60mm with Jamex shocks and springs.

I then drove the car around like that with a couple of bits added including full leather re trimmed seats. It was in March 2012 when the big things started to happen and I purchased a 1999 1.6 Corsa Sport from Copart for 220.

This was how the car sat just before it was pulled apart ready to swap the 1.2 8v with the 1.6 16v.

The engine was then removed from the Corsa and the shell was then sold to a friend to be raced. I didn't have a clue how to remove the Corsa dashboard so the hacksaw came out for a play lol.

I then bought some 256mm brakes with EPC grooved and drilled discs. I also came across a Dbilas inlet manifold for 200 so had to have it.

It was then time to remove the engine from the Nova.

The car was then loaded on the trailer ready to go to the bodyshop to have the engine bay painted.

I bought a set of 15" Compomotive MO5's but stupidly sold them because I didn't think they suited the car at the time. I also got some of my dash parts flocked by Alan (Prey) at Flocking Fantastic.

Back to the car. Once it was dropped off I spent a couple of hours cleaning off the 20+ years of oil and dirt.

The washer bottle clamp was removed, the rust on the N/S inner wing was sorted and the bay was prepped and then masked off ready for paint.

It was then moved into the paint booth. The car was masked up and it was then painted. I decided to go for an anthracite with a gold speckle. I chose this over red, just in case I decide to change the car colour in the future.

The underside of the bonnet was also painted red and the bay was demasked.

I also picked up an early boot (without the grab handle) which already had already been de-locked. I got it painted at the same time as the engine bay.

Then it was time for me and my dad to start with the engine conversion. First thing to sort was the wiring.

I also spent some time cleaning and painted the engine ready for the conversion. I also got the rocker cover and Dbilas inlet painted as they were both pitted and looked poop.

A Nova GTE flywheel (lighter than the standard Corsa one) was added as well as a new LUK clutch to suit. I also fitted a new GM timing belt kit whilst it was easy to do. I also replaced the multi v-belt setup with a Nova SRi bottom pulley and Nova alternator. This then did away with the power steering pump.

Once everything was sorted it was then time to get the engine in.

Wiring was then tidied a bit.

Here's a couple of videos. The first being the first start-up and the second was it ticking over with just the exhaust mainfold fitted.

Everything all back together including 4-2-1 Sportex manifold.

Newly painted bumpers were fitted (replaced Mk2 rear bumper with Mk1 GTE one) along with the new smooth boot.

Once it was all back together I started using it as a daily again. I replaced the recaro's with a set of Cobra Monaco's and Sabelt 3" harnesses.

Flocked dash pieces fitted along with flocked steering wheel and carbon fibre door cards which cost me just 10!

    Red bumper tape added.

I bought some 15" OZ Rallye wheels, got them painted, fitted them but then sold them as I didn't think they suited the car. I then bought another set of MO5's which are currently still fitted.

ITG filter replaced the modified corsa airbox.

I then spent a 3-4 weeks ordering some red Roose Motorsport hoses individually (made it look cheaper than spending 250-300 in one hit). Once I got them all, I got them fitted. I also managed to find a Bailey header tank so got that fitted at the same time.

My new MO5's arrived. I also decided to remove the side skirts but unfortunately I found some rust hiding behind them (bottom of arch/sill). It was then time to get the rust sorted. I originally planned on just getting the rear quarters, boot and doors painted but ended up getting the whole car painted. This is because the painter is a very good friend and he wanted to change the colour of the car to Vauxhall Flame Red. Before it was sent away to be sorted I decided to paint the inner arches with red Hammerite.

The car was then slightly stripped and was trailer'd to the bodyshop.

Once it was at the bodyshop a bit of a previous bodge was discovered! The bottom of the arch was acutally all fibreglass and was put over the top of rust. This was then sorted by chopping the lot out and fitting an arch repair panel. A new inner arch piece was also added. The arches where also rolled and the arches were cleaned to bare metal to eliminate any rust, if there was any.

New top-tint windscreen was bought and fitted. I also bit the bullet and bought a set of GAZ ultra low rear coilovers so I could get a height I liked.

The arch repair was then sorted, the car was prept and then painted in Flame Red.

I left the car for a couple of days to let the paint dry properly before assembling it back together.

GAZ rear coilovers were then fitted (with added adjustment to the inner arch lol) as well as some SPAX RSX front coilovers that I purchased.

Final parts were painted and then fitted including wing mirror caps, grill, door handles and rear spoiler (replaced Mk1 spoiler with Mk2 GSi one).

A couple of weeks later (week before PVS) I noticed that the head gasket had gone! It was then a bit of a rush to get it sorted and was all finished at 9pm on the Friday night (we left at 10:00am on the Saturday).

Once it was sorted I spent some time tidying up the wiring and wrapping it all in fabric tape (as used on VAG cars). These pictures are once it was all cleaned and ready for PVS.

After PVS I cleaned, polished and waxed the car. I then decided to test out my GoPro camera.

I replaced the rubber grommit covering the wiper hole with a T-pull cable. I will be rigging it up to a cut off switch in the future.

Fire extinguisher was then fitted to the passenger foot well.

Since buying the MO5's, I haven't really liked the colour but because they had recently been powder coated it would have been a waste to get them repainted. But, now I think it's time and Photoshopped the following. I'm feeling more towards the bronze tint colour but maybe a tad lighter. I also fitted my rear window surrounds.

After having lots of people asking me what power the engine was running I decided to put down to the SVA Imports open day and put the Nova on the dyno. The results were a bit optomistic at 129bhp at the wheels with just a full Ashley exhaust system, 4-2-1 manifold, lightened flywheel and Dbilas inlet. The feedback I got was that it drops in torque/power massively after 5,000rpm which is strange as these engines normally have power right up to the limiter. Anyway, the cause of this was soon found out as it was running rather low on fuel! When we left it had no power but once filled up with fuel it was fine again. I shall hopefully be getting it dyno'd somewhere else with Sam_Sri and his Corsa so we shall see what result that brings.

That then brings us to Monday where I fitted my rear anti roll bar and lowered the front of the car a bit more.

I also received this in the post today after looking for one for ages! (it's a brake reservoir cover)

Car looks lovely. Enjoying reading how it's developed.
Are you sure that the 129Bhp reading wheel power? Although it's on a RR, dyno companies normally use a formula to work out how much power is lost via the transmission and publish the Bhp figures at the flywheel so you can see how much it's improved over standard

129Bhp at the wheels would be approx 150bhp at the flywheel. Standard is approx 104bhp at the flywheel so would seem a little high from just exhaust and intake mods.
