    getting rid of sky.

Thinking of getting rid of sky and getting a Roku type box. Anybody have any experience with them? What sort of channels will i get? how are they for watching movies/tv shows that i have acquired?

You mean the Now TV on Roku? It's OK for movie channels but there are no TV channels. If you buy the official Roku (not the rebranded Now TV box) you can install Netflix.

I have the Roku 2 XS and a Now TV box, I think they're great but I use them for Plex and rarely touch any other apps (sometimes go on iPlayer - it's the same as it is on the PS3).

Ah right, was thinking more along the lines of actual TV channels. probably looking at freesat, but maybe one with the option of accessing my media in some way. doubt I'll be able to get both in the same unit. Looked at freesat using the sky box, they don't even give you the option of recording channels, it's a 10 extra, whereas the actual freesat boxes can be had with catch up tv and recording.

Yeah, no good for recording really, I'm yet to see a Freesat box with an interface as nice as the Sky one though.

I've had the same thoughts and it does depend what you watch. I would be happy with a media server and some access to formula 1. I've kept my sky just for the f1 however for everything else a big media server, running plex and usenet, would suit me better.

I know, I'm used to the sky interface now and it would be hard to change. But I've come to realise that everything I watch is available for free elsewhere and anything else can be gotten pretty easily so thats a pro for getting rid. Might just bull**** them to see if they'll give me a discount for a while.

Humax Freesat boxes are very well rated, I often consider buying one but I rarely watch TV so it seems like a waste.

A decent spec box would probably pay for itself with the amount saved from sky. Will have to phone to see how much I'd save tomorrow.

Used to sell the Humax range at Maplin. Was very popular, and tbh, was streets ahead of all the others.

I'll have a look at these humax boxes then. Only thing I don't want on it is the 7-day rewind function, see what sort of deal i can have methinks

You'll end up being offered loads of free stuff by sky before they let you cancel

It happened with movies the last time, cancelled once the free period was up. Probably end up doing the same again. I just hate the fact that you've got to threaten to leave in order to give you anything. Surely the fact they can offer a few months free means they're charging too much

Most people don't bother to call up though.

Dad pays around 80 a month, as we have all the channels on sky here. Doesn't watch any sports neither do I. We have kids for mums job, and movies for us.
Could get that loads cheaper, but he can't be bothered to call up

That's what they hope for i suppose. people pay up every month, for services they may no longer want, no questions asked.

Personally I would go with a media box for the other benefits

I have a Humax Freesat HD box. It's not bad. The interface while okay to use is very slow though.
When you go on the guide, the tv is supposed to carry on in the background, but it takes ages to load so most of the time it's just black behind the guide.
The recorded stuff area is crap too. Unorganised, hard to find what you want, and impossible to delete stuff quickly to make space.
Also it doesn't have the channel Dave. So most of the time I just use the freebies built into the tv. This is also because my tv only has one hi port, which the Xbox is usually in.
Incidentally the Xbox only sees use because we use it for Netflix.
