thecorsa entry into the Chester Cup

I've taken the liberty of entering us into the Chester Cup, it's like the Americas Cup only a bit smaller. It's the Chester Sailing Club Commodore's Picnic, Hog Roast and Model Boat Race.

Our boat just meets the rules of 600mm max length and 700mm max height from keel to mast tip. No form of remote control is needed so she's balanced on a central keel with two outer balance hulls. That ought to tip the sails to leeward which will allow them to fill. The jib is controlled by a simple elastic band. The mainsail isn't sheeted at all, there is a brace to replace the kicker and I used plastic cut out of an ice-cream tub to make a hinged mast to boom arrangement - the plastic flexes, but the resistance ought to pull the sale in enough to deliver some drive.

Here she is in her pre-race splendour

The race is on Sunday - I'll let you know how she does.

On the subject of getting some publicity, I spent yesterday dropping fliers out for our daughter's art exhibition. It was a bit hot! Recovering in the pub afterwards I wondered if it is OK to make up some simple fliers with the website address on and leave them on any Corsas parked locally.

Taurus, is your real name Neil Buchanan? That is an impressive piece of work! Out of all that, the best I could have come up with would have been a hat.

As for the flyers, go for it! It's always batted around the forum, but never bears fruit. If you could post a copy of the flyer up here, all other members can print it off to do the same.

You're going to struggle to fit on that boat.

I can imagine a load of middle aged blokes racing their mini boats, something like this but on water...and with a boat.

Guys we just won the Chester Cup, by a significant margin. Will post video when I'm home and sober.

Hope that works. It didn't win any of the pre-race prizes for best design or use of materials, but once it hit the water it was off like a shot. Sorry it's a lousy video, it was half way across the river before I got the phone out of my waterproof pouch.

We ferried over from the sailing club side due to wind direction and then launched back to the club, on a brisk crosswind which blew many boats to the right of the picture.

I was pretty impressed with the way it handled gusts and shifts in wind direction and actually sailed directly for the club shore - the only boat which managed do to so

If the link works - our boat is the one with the black sail right at the front. Sorry I forgot I had a zoom function - it was all a bit hectic.

(You can't see it too well, but at the last moment it tacked to the left and landed directly on the left hand slipway - which those on the far shore said looked pretty damn impressive for a boat with no steering or form of outside control.)

The kids came over with their dads, and one mum, then we made them swim back - well to be honest they were all in the river already so it didn't take much persuasion.
